From Kickboxing to Real-World Skills: Clem’s Self-Defence Journey

Self Defence London

When Clem first joined our Self-Defence classes, she was already training hard in Sanda Kickboxing. But she wanted something that went beyond sport something with real-life application. In this candid interview, Clem shares how the classes have surprised her, the impact they’ve had on her confidence, and why she believes it’s okay to show up nervous (and do it anyway). Her words are a powerful reminder that self-defence isn’t just about techniques it’s about building resilience, awareness, and a strong, supportive community.

What made you want to start training in Self-Defence?

Hello I was training already in the Sanda Kickboxing Club and I wanted to do something that had a bit more of real life application, so I thought Self-Defence would be really good.

What surprised you about the Self-Defence classes?

Coach Kitty ran a seminar last year where she spoke a lot in that class about different types of violence that women have experienced and it was really shocking!  So many stories.  We can talk about it and we can laugh about it, but actually the reality is that we're all experiencing really horrible moments and we don't know what to do about it.

Has your confidence changed since you started training in Self-Defence?

I definitely feel like I've got a toolkit, which I didn't have before.  So I feel more equipped

What’s the vibe like at class?

The vibe in the room is great!  It's a really good group of women and men and it's just very supportive.  A lot of the work is about breaking down your own filters and it's really good to have a supportive team.

What would you say to someone who was nervous about coming to try a Self-Defence class?

I’d say: “just be nervous”!!   And still do it and just get better!  I think it’s fine to be nervous, it's okay and it's okay to be embarrassed and you always experience those things in life so it's better to learn how to cope with it and keep going - all in a supportive group.  So be embarrassed and nervous!!

Clem says:

Class is great but you should come for yourself and test it out!!
