You might have a million questions running through your mind, from what the classes are like to what you’ll actually learn. While we can’t answer every single question, we’ve written this article to cover some of the most common ones about our Brixton self defence classes.

“Do I need to be fit to start self-defence classes?”

You can be reassured that you do not need to be fit to learn self defence. In fact, our south London self defence classes are specifically designed to increase your strength and fitness so that you can perform self defence techniques with maximum effectiveness! “Will I get hurt in a class?”

There is a risk in practicing any skill that has elements of combat that you will get injured, at Brixton Self Defence we have a big emphasis on practicing techniques with safety, control and respect.

All of our classes are structured and supervised by our qualified coaches. We will progress the intensity of training with your skill and experience level so you can stay safe!

“What if I feel awkward or nervous?”

Feeling nervous before attending your first self defence class is completely normal. In fact, overcoming that initial fear is the first step toward learning how to manage your emotions under pressure, an essential part of self defence training. “Is self-defence only for women?”

While some self defence techniques may differ slightly for men and women, the majority of skills are the same and everyone can benefit greatly from learning them. “Do I need any special equipment or clothes?”

You might be wondering, “What should I wear to my first self-defence class with Brixton Self Defence? The good news is, it’s simple; just wear something comfortable that you can move in easily, like a t-shirt and shorts or general gym wear. Make sure your clothing doesn’t have anything that could cause abrasions, such as zips or sharp edges, and please remove all jewellery before class. After your trial session, the only piece of equipment you’ll need is a mouth guard, no other special gear required!

“Will I have to spar or fight?”

In our Brixton self defence classes, you won’t be “sparring” in the traditional sense, as self defence scenarios are very different from combat sports. Instead, you’ll take part in scenario based drills where one person plays the role of the attacker and the other practises defending themselves, with the ultimate goal of escaping safely.

These drills are dynamic and non compliant, just like sparring, so you can pressure test and refine your techniques in a realistic way. But don’t worry, we won’t throw you into full on scenario training right away. You’ll build up to it gradually over several months, starting with focused technique work and structured drills to help you gain confidence and skill step by step.

“What if I’m the oldest/youngest one there?”

We welcome anyone aged 15 and over to join our self defence classes. Whether you're a teenager or a fully fledged adult, our experienced self defence coaches will work with you to help you build confidence and learn how to defend yourself effectively.
