Real People. Real Skills. Meet Sakina, one of our students
Meet our self defence student Sakina
Have you ever thought about trying a Self Defence class?
Meet Sakina, one of our students to find out more…
What made you try a Self Defence class?
I always had it in my mind that I wanted to try self defence and when I saw that Brixton Self Defence had opened this Self Defence class I was like, this is the perfect space to learn!
I think as a woman and living in big cities we have all felt a bit unsafe at moments or a bit worried in different situations, so I think it's always been something in the back of my mind to try!
I wanted to build my confidence in terms of being in the city streets and feeling like I can protect myself.
What are you learning in class?
It's not just cool tricks, it's real life tools and I think that pleasantly surprised me that classes are very grounded in reality to help in real life situations.
What’s been your favourite thing in class?
My favourite thing has been learning to bring out my fire! [learning to express yourself when you’re uncomfortable - to know your voice]. Kitty, my coach, always says this to me how important this is and I think it's a really safe space for students to learn how to be more confident. My confidence has really built!
How would you describe the vibe in class?
The vibe? Everyone is so friendly! It's difficult topics that can be a bit triggering, but everyone is so fun and joyful and friendly and supportive, so it actually feels really empowering, not scary. It's a really safe space, there's a lot of space for discussion and sharing experiences, which is very supportive.
How has your confidence changed since you’ve been training?
I feel like my confidence is much more realistic and I feel more aware. Classes have also increased my confidence in being able to actually physically defend myself if anything was to happen.
If someone was nervous to try out, what would you say to them?
I would say just come to a free trial! It's free, it's really supportive, you can just take it at your own pace, so just come and try and meet us, that would be great!
